Company History
The roots of Azalea Aviation go back to 2005, when founder Bill Clapp began his research into cutting-edge experimental aircraft. This marked the beginning of a journey characterized by innovation, determination, and a passion for flight. By 2013, the company was designing prototype molds, and by 2015, Azalea Aviation introduced the Saberwing aircraft prototype—a product of years of careful planning and engineering.
Bill Clapp's journey in aviation started even earlier, with the construction of a KR-2S aircraft in 2004. His innovative use of the Corvair engine—a reliable and cost-effective powerplant—earned him a 2009 cover feature in Sport Aviation Magazine. Today, Bill owns five aircraft, four of which are powered by Corvair engines, demonstrating his commitment to advancing the potential of this powerplant.
In addition to designing and building aircraft, Bill has extensive aviation credentials, including:
- 5,000 flight hours, with 3,000 hours on Corvair-powered planes
- Certifications as an A&P mechanic and Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)
- A degree in aviation science and a minor in theology from the Moody Bible Institute's Jungle Aviation Program
Bill's passion for aviation extends beyond engineering. He has acted as a test pilot for over 30 experimental aircraft and uses his CFI certification to train and transition new pilots into experimental aircraft, ensuring safety and confidence in their builds.
